The long-term aim is to realize a decentralized blockchain-based education infrastructure accessible to anyone in the world and owned by no single entity. The term for such an organization is a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). Key benefits of choosing such an infrastructure are: immutability, security, accessibility and the possibility for participants to control their own data. KOIOS thus will be an online environment on which participants can create a personal account, keeping track of their actions and activities within the platform. Progress and activity will be monitored and stored, creating personalized track-records. This goes for both students and teachers.
Students will create an account which will be registered on the blockchain. Once logged in on KOIOS, a student will see a tailor-made, personalized environment showing everything from personal details to accomplishments. A social-network like interface will give the student access to educational material, other students, teachers, professionals and other participants in the network. The student can choose who he/she interacts with, what education he/she will start and what data he/she is willing to share.
Teachers will find a similar environment. A personalized interface showing their skills, track-records, collaborations, documentation/papers etc. Teachers will be able to engage with students, promote their lectures and potentially get paid for their activities.
By using blockchain technology, KOIOS will ensure that users control their own data and progress will immutably be stored on a secure ledger. But an arguably stronger aspect is the element of gamification that blockchain makes possible. It would become possible for students and teachers to transact amongst each other. Teachers could teach their subjects for free but might also choose to get paid for their efforts with micropayments or streaming payments in a peer-to-peer fashion. Entities may invest in students, teachers or course developments to quickly gain access to talent. Transparency throughout the ecosystem will also help students display their achievements, potentially connecting them to employers quickly and more efficiently. We are confident that by creating a personalized environment and a secure ledger, a wide range of experiments can be initiated and many challenges educational institutes face may find a solution.
Because of the online nature of KOIOS, students from all over the world will have access to this environment easily. Low operational costs ensure a low financial barrier to entry and participants can communicate amongst each other easily in an online communication environment. With the backing of institutes, we can also ensure physical environments that will enable physical learning, community gatherings and testing students.
One more crucial part of KOIOS is accreditation. We aim to reward graduates with a KOIOS certificate that is connected to traditional institutes. The first experiment will be certifying the THUAS Blockchain Minor. Graduates (whom will graduate at THUAS) will receive a KOIOS certificate that will also show the participating/enabling institute. In this case this will be THUAS. Such a certificate allows for traditional institutes to experiment with online certification and for an innovative platform like KOIOS to benefit from the credibility and reputation that institutes like THUAS have. For a student we believe this will be beneficial because of an upgrade to the education they received. If KOIOS can attract high level teachers, a KOIOS certificate will show that students went the extra mile and received high quality, peer-to-peer education from experts in their respected fields, besides their traditional education efforts.
